Take Action on Cuts to Development and Peace

Please support a solidarity fast on Good Friday, asking participants to fast without food as long as the sun shines, and collect the money your household might have spent on food that day, and donate it to CCODP (you can donate on the Development and Peace website or by phone or mail). Let everyone in your parish know about this fast to protest the cuts. Ask the leaders of religious congregations to participate in the Good Friday fast, and to publicly release a letter to the Prime Minister asking for this decision to be rescinded. Request that your local bishop participate in the Good Friday solidarity fast, and also release a public letter on the diocesan website, protesting this government action (by writing to the PM) and encouraging the faithful to support CCODP’s work. Taking Action Against Harmful Mining Practices

In the fall of 2010, the Sisters and Associates of Visitation Province conducted a campaign to advocate for better mining practices. CND sisters are living in communities directly affected by the mines in Honduras and Guatemala. The JPIC Office has been active in trying to call attention to the situation. We invited people to join us by urging the MP to support a private member's bill, number C-300, which implements a number of key recommendations from the March 2007 Final Report of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Roundtables. The recommendations reflected the consensus of a multi-stakeholder advisory group that had representatives from industry and civil society groups. Letter to Bev Oda re: CIDA cuts to KAIROS

With dismay and great disappointment I recently learned of the Canadian Government's decision to bring an end to CIDA funding for KAIROS Canada. As one of the many Roman Catholic Religious Communities in Canada, we strive to serve the poorest and most vulnerable in Canada and around the world. In cooperative endeavors like KAIROS, we turn our humble contribution into something with considerable impact. We know that the loss of KAIROS’s expertise in international partnership will be felt by many organizations such as ours, as well as by the many individuals and communities who have benefited from the important projects that KAIROS has undertaken overseas.
