Prayers

Prayer can be described as communication with God. There are many ways to pray, and to St. Francis of Assisi is attributed the phrase, “Pray always – even use words if necessary!”

For the followers of Jesus, prayer is not a distraction from the good works we are called to do in our lives, but a way of allowing us to enter more deeply into the good. For this reason, prayer and reflection are necessary elements of the social and ecological justice activities we attempt to promote.

Here in this part of our website we will share prayers and reflections from many sources and traditions, in an attempt to inspire and deepen our collective efforts for justice, peace, and the integrity of creation.

A Prayer by Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador?

Oscar A. Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador, in El Salvador, was assassinated on March 24, 1980, while celebrating Mass in a small chapel in a cancer hospital where he lived. He had always been close to his people, preached a prophetic gospel, denouncing the injustice in his country and supporting the development of popular and mass organizations. He became the voice of the Salvadoran people when all other channels of expression had been crushed by the repression. Read more about A Prayer by Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador?

Hope

Even if I knew the world would
come to an end tomorrow,
I would go into the garden
and plant an olive tree.
Unless we plant now,
there will be no shade for our children,
no oil to heal the wounds,
no olive branches to wave for peace
when it comes.

Father Mitri Raheb, Lutheran pastor in Bethlehem, to KAIROS Middle East delegation, March 2004.

A Prayer for Global Restoration

Good and Gracious God,
Source of all life,
all creation is charged with your Divine Energy.

Ignite your spark within us,
that we may know ourselves
as truly human and holy,
irrevocably part of the Web of Life.

All creation
-each star and every flower,
-each drop of water and every person,
-each and every atom, down to its very electrons,
explodes with the revelation
of your Sacred Mystery.

Our minds alone cannot fathom such splendor.
Our hearts can only respond in awe, praise and gratitude. Read more about A Prayer for Global Restoration
